First there was friendster, then myspace, and then xanga, and then facebook, and now there is twitter. I don’t know about you guys, but it seems to me that all this new technology is turning people a little narcissistic. From getting comments on your wall, posting pictures of what you wear daily, or updating your status every 10 mins, it seems as if everyone wants to let the world know “I want you to look at me.” Now I’m not trying to judge anyone, c’mon, I started this blog thinking I was “cool” enough and I wanted you guys to all know that. Hey, I think it may give a little confidence to those who are insecure, but I’m just saying…whether they know it or not, a lot of people out there are starting to think highly of themselves

I’m sure we all use to be on friendster. I know the site was used so you connect with friends and stay in touch… But you know the main reason people loved it was because of the comments. You know, your friend writes a nice little paragraph about how great you are, and then out of love and courtesy you usually do the same. Even if you met the person the day before, the next day there would be the usual” it was great meeting you. I had fun” type deal on your comments. Same with facebook, but ill get more on that later. Friendster was a nice little site where you could connect with friends and read a little note about yourself.
Then came along myspace. Ill admit I was a little late to the myspace and xanga age. I was just going against the grain, but I eventually gave in. I am still surprised that myspace is around seeing that facebook has pretty much conquered the “connecting of people” it probably has to do with the fact that many people use myspace to promote something, that usually being themselves. Myspace brought along the idea of people taking these “emo-im not looking into the camera, this is a candid but I’m really taking this by myself photo” you know what I’m talking about. And you know when those photos are taken; it’s never in one shot. They have to take the picture, check it, and then redo. And of course, don’t forget the fact that the camera has to be at an angle where your eyes look huge and the rest of you is tiny. No normal pictures allowed. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to post a good picture for the world to see, but my issue with this is that people spend numerous hrs trying to perfect a picture where they look super cute; when in reality you look nothing like that. People dog Britney Spears and Mariah Carey for photoshopping a lot, I think these myspace pictures fall along that category. Its all angles and lighting people.

Then of course there is this new thing that pushed xanga way out of business, Blogspot, wordpress, etc. All these blogs I think are a great way for people to access interesting information at their fingertips. (Like this blog… :)) but then people started fashion blogs and it seems as if its gotten out of control. People post pictures of their daily outfits and their new purchases.  I have a few mixed feelings about that. I think its great to express your love of fashion to the world and such, but I’ve got to wonder what is the real reason they do this? I’m assuming purely for themselves. Ill admit I have my daily reads I go to and ill read the comments and most of them usually say” oh you’re so gorgeous! I love this outfit. You pull it off great!” But of course there’s the usual, “you’re not pretty at all. You should stop this” message, and how does the blogger usually respond? ” I don’t care what you say, this is my blog, and I can say whatever I want. This is for me.” This is all true, but if the blogger was really doing this for themselves, is it really necessary to post about yourself? Couldn’t they just go about their daily lives of fashion without getting everyone’s input? Or do they really need to read 200 comments about how great they are.

I don’t know too much about Twitter, but that seems to be the latest craze too. From what I know of, it’s basically being able to update your status on your phone. I think this has gotten pretty big quickly as well.  I guess the normal saying for twitter is “ Follow me on Twitter” The biggest issue I have with this is, privacy. Do you really want the whole world to know what you are doing every single moment of the day? But then again, if you think a little highly of yourself, you’d think the rest would like to know what you are doing…
